Discover The expert interview, the section where professionals explain in practical terms why and how essential oils are used in their department.
Dr Philippe Colls, a urological surgeon, takes the floor.
Could you introduce yourself?
I have been a urological surgeon since 1997 and have been practising in a private clinic in Nantes since 2004. Trained in clinical aromatherapy (University Diploma from Strasbourg, 2018), I am now the lead specialist in aromatherapy and non-pharmacological treatments at my clinic.
Why do you use essential oils in your practice?
Urology deals with many infectious conditions for which conventional treatments are sometimes insufficient. I therefore turned to phyto-aromatherapy to enhance patient care.
Essential oils open up new possibilities, particularly in recurrent cystitis, where infections persist despite antibiotics due to resistant biofilms. Used over the medium and long term, they help tackle these biofilms and improve the effectiveness of treatments.
I also use them for post-operative healing, where they provide a real benefit for difficult wounds.
Which blend do you use most often?
With experience, I have refined my prescriptions by combining the properties of essential oils with pathophysiology.
👉 For chronic, resistant infections, I prescribe oral oleocapsules, combining essential oils with anti-infectious properties (such as oregano, cinnamon or peppermint).
👉 For wound healing, I mainly use lavender essential oil (0.3% for children up to 5% for adults in calendula carrier oil)
