Celebrating Japanese Excellence in Clinical Aromatherapy

Reiko Sato wins the 2025 International René-Maurice Gattefossé Prize

Reiko Sato is a pharmacist at the Medical Corporation Hasegawa-Kai, Shonan Hospital, in Fujisawa City, Japan. A pioneer in her field, she has integrated aromatherapy into patient care since 2002. She is also an active member of the Japanese Society of Hospital Pharmacists, the Japan Geriatric Society of Pharmacotherapy, and the Japan Aromatherapy Society.

Over more than two decades, Reiko has designed and manages a hospital-wide system that enables nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and caregivers to safely and effectively practice aromatherapy as part of routine care.

Her protocols include the use of essential oils to:

  • Manage skin dryness and itching in elderly patients, cancer patients, and those with declining liver and kidney function
  • Address odour issues, such as those caused by malignant skin ulcers
  • Reduce anxiety, insomnia and restlessness
  • Relieve nausea, respiratory discomfort or dry mouth
  • Improve communication and comfort between patients, families and healthcare providers

Essential oils are also used in palliative and end-of-life care, including post-mortem care procedures: an area that is not widely used by the international community

“I would like to use this award to further promote the safe and effective implementation of aromatherapy in clinical settings throughout Japan — including palliative care units, geriatric wards and general hospitals.”

Reiko firmly believes that her greatest contribution lies in striking the right balance between safety and accessibility to provide healthcare providers with the knowledge and confidence to integrate aromatherapy into their medical practice.

We are proud to recognize Reiko Sato’s dedication and to support her mission.
